July 16/20 SMJFL Update: 2020 Season Cancelled
“After careful consideration of the current Victorian Government’s restrictions and the period of time we anticipate before these are eased, the SMJFL Board has resolved that the league can no longer offer its traditional football season this year.
The league will continue to consult with its member clubs over the coming weeks and endeavour to offer optional alternative programs if and when government restrictions allow. ”
Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that your Committee acknowledges it is unlikely junior football of any significance will be conducted in 2020.
Most of all, we hope everyone is ok: the pressure everyone is facing from health to economic to home schooling is immense. Our thoughts and well wishes are with our whole club community.
As you are aware, our club was ready to play July 12. With that readiness comes a whole range of expenses already incurred: coaching, gear, medical and insurance. These have all been paid and result in the club recording a material cash loss for the year.
With that as background, we are keen to provide all families two options in regard to their 2020 registration fees:
- The club’s preferred option and request is that families roll over their registration fees into 2021: if you are in a position to do this, it will be extremely beneficial to our club’s ability to kick off 2021 in a strong position. It will also lock in the 2020 registration fee for you for next season (where given the economic impacts to the league, an increased registration fee is likely). If this is your choice, no action is required of you.
- If this is not your preferred option, full refunds are available.
PROCESS FOR REFUNDS: should you wish to receive a refund, please email info@brightonbeachjfc.

AUSKICK: to our youngest members, it is also highly unlikely Auskick will be conducted this year. As this program is administered by the AFL directly, please stay tuned for more messages from the AFL. Refunds and other administrative processes are managed centrally by the AFL.
We will continue to let you know of any developments over the coming weeks. I know there have been a lot of extremely disappointed junior footballers over the last week and this message may only make things worse. The optimist in me tells me that our club spirit is strong and after this winter of hibernation, we will bounce out of the blocks next season better than ever.
Again, thank you to so many of our families who have volunteered over the last few months and very best wishes to all.
